Autumn and Meetings

Posted on 2007.10.16 at 15:54
Today was quite cool.Literally, I mean. Not cold exactly, but enough that any gust of wind set me to shivering in just the suit.  (Note for future reference that I shiver quite easily.) I definitely need to procure some long underwear or somesuch to start experimenting with what goes on under the suit before it gets truly frigid.

Class and campus were quite average. A few interesting reactions. Stares, pauses. Nothing worth reporting. After this, Ani headed over to the art department for a scheduled meeting with the professor sponsoring the project. Once in that building, it was quickly remembered why I try to never let Ani onto that part of campus. Although it's nice to be in an environment where taken aback passersby immediately ask whether it's performance art. I was recognized twice based on my voice. Oops!

A friend mentioned that she'd never have known who I was if I hadn't spoken. Well-hidden physically, but Ani's not mute. Oh well.

The meeting with the professor, CP, went well. Nothing groundbreaking, as CP and I see one another regularly in passing.  Almost everything said has been in the blog at some point. She loaned me an interesting book on other performance art pieces, some of which were similar on some level or another.

One point of interest: a fellow from the school newspaper "is interested" in talking to Ani about photos...however, I'm not sure whether this is for art-related personal use or a news story. I do hope that it's the latter. The exposure would be fantastic and possibly assure a few extra people that Ani isn't dangerous and okay to talk to. I left my e-mail address. Hopefully this will go somewhere.

Oh, I bet he means a story. I've been expecting you to land in the school paper from day one! :) (BTW, I'm also from IMVU... I followed you here through KittenKat.) :D

Underwear

Hi Ani,
Lycra covers all parts of the body but will not keep the person who is wearing it warm. This is why ballet-dancers invented something to come over this problem: google for 'capezio body tights'. Those tights are quite afordable and will keep you warm due to a special fabric-mixture, if you wear it under lycra-clothing.
Congrats to your project - like that idea. My wife and me have worn Zentai-suits in public on several occasions and like to look at peoples reactions - which are almost 100% positive.
Best regards from Berlin, Germany

Re: Underwear

WHen I used to cross country ski, I used to wear the Danskin regular 100% nylon tights under my Lifa poly-pro long johns for more warmth. They also do great under regular lycra workout tights as well. I wore them biking on the Yough River Trail from Confluence to Ohiopyle, PA. And it does get chilly in the mid to late fall and early spring, especially when you ride next to the Youghiogheny River.

Hello

Hi Ani,

I found your journal through a link on a spandex fetish page. Someone mentioned you in a forum. I think your experiment is very interesting and I hope it goes well for you. I check your posts everyday and eagerly await the next. Keep up the good work!

Keeping warm in lycra suits

Hi Ani,

Couldn't quite figure out how to get that "OpenID" option to work, so will just mention that I usually post as Throughfare. Tried sending an email with some other info too, but possibly that didn't work.

Anyhow, here's what I found about keeping warm when I lived out west & did a lot of cross-country ski racing, in those 1-piece lycra suits. Nowadays I do more rollerblading & cycling, but still use the same principles in cold weatehr.

1: You want air in contact with your skin, not water.

2: Underwear that soaks up moisture & retains it (hydrophilic) is bad. This means that when you're indoors where it's too warm or run or work outdoors and start to sweat, it just soaks into the material and stays there. Then you will freeze outdoors, because the water in the material transports heat (your heat!) to the outside way too fast.

3: Cotton is the worst hydrophilic material. Don't buy the cheap cotton longjohns that a lot of the department stores & big box stores sell. Also avoid wearing cotton lycra tights or cotton t-shirts under your suit. Nylon is much less hydrophilic than cotton, but still gets damp too fast, nylon lycra tights & tops under our suit won't be as bad as cotton, but will still get you chilled if you sweat.

4: You want underwear made of what's called "hydophobic" or "wicking" material. This is material that repels rather than absorbs water. The usual hydrophobic material is polypropylene, and there are others, and fine threads are woven into a stretchy, relatively open knit. What happens with hydrophobic materials is, your sweat goes through the material to the outside, and you keep air against your skin.

5: You can get polypropylene or wicking undies at the sports & outdoors stores, like REI, or the places that sell to the cross country ski raciing crowd. It can be ordered online- maybe you can get good deals on ebay. BTW- pure silk is also a great wicking material, if your're willing to pay the high cost for it. I found polypropylene to be stretchier though, which makes a difference when you're racing hard (less chafing) and it does cost less.

There's a bit more to know about warmth without bulk, but I'll see how this posting technique works & maybe followup later.
